I’d like to start this Osprey Farpoint 40 review with a few words about where it comes from and the philosophy behind it… We’re talking, after all, about Osprey, a Californian company founded back in 1974, therefore, with a history that spans on over 40 years! Quality really is their middle name, as you’ll soon discover.
Mike Pfotenhauer, founder and chief designer, said, when talking about the early days of his business, that he enjoys life better when surrounded with all the things he builds himself. He claims: “I understand my surroundings and I connect better with my environment”.
You’ll have to try an Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack and see what it means to literally surround yourself with the things that matter to you, regardless where you travel.
Now, the Farpoint 40 is the smallest in a series of 4 models - 40, 55, 70 and 80 liters. Nevertheless, it can serve you well with most travel requirements, in the city or on a mountainous adventure. In case you already saw it and asked yourself… Is it a backpack? Is it a carry on bag? Is it a duffel bag? Let me just show you how and why it’s an all-in-one luggage option!
My Experience with the Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack
You know me, I’m a passionate traveler… Some would even call me picky, considering how hard I decide on purchasing travel items. When I started the “quest” that led me to choose this Osprey Farpoint 40 model, I obviously began asking around. Since I kept rejecting every single suggestion received from my friends (for all the right reasons, if you ask me!), they concluded that what I wanted didn’t exist. The stubborn me just changed the strategy, continuing the research online. What was on my feature checklist?
As you can see, I was aiming for the right size that is comfy to carry, some practical features, and a fair price for the value. Nothing extraordinary, only the ideal combo. I found it on the Osprey 40 backpack and I knew it the moment I put it on my shoulders.
It felt like it was made for me, almost like a coat tucking my body line, with the weight evenly distributed, not too tight around my chest, perfect around my hips – you get the point. It’s been over 2 years since then and I rarely choose a different bag for any travel longer than a weekend! Read on and you’ll see why…

The Osprey Farpoint 40 Review in Terms of Design
The Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack features a unisex, slim and sleek design. Made of 210D Nylon Mini Hex Diamond Ripstop, with 600D Packcloth accents and bottom, it is also built to last. I could talk to you for ages about how great mine looks even today, after more than 2 years of extensive travel and use. And when I say use, I mean mostly as a carry-on bag (the 21 X 14 X 15 inches Osprey Farpoint 40 dimensions are perfect for this purpose), though, at times, I also turned it into my sophisticated town bag.
Because I have mentioned the two different sizes available, I should add that the S/M format is recommended for people under 5’6”, while the M/L size is for anyone above this size. If you fear that the 40-liter capacity is too little, I can only say that, the more you travel, the more you will appreciate the ability to pack light.
The Osprey Farpoint 40 dimensions will guide you into stop taking unnecessary things while offering you a very comfortable and ergonomic carrying system.
All its design features summed up, I would call it backpack that is:
If you look at how it’s made, you won’t help but notice how the Osprey 40 gives you the freedom and the comfort of a hiking backpack, with the added benefit of easy packing, suitcase style. Here are the design features that make this super easy and comfortable backpack my favorite travel companion:
- Large panel zip access – imagine you would stash everything you need in your backpack and then, have to take out something from the bottom… A top loading pack would have given you serious headaches, which doesn’t apply for the Osprey Farpoint 40, with its front loading style.
- Minimal, practical pockets – aside from the main compartment, you have an outer zippered pocket. On the inside, you can isolate some stuff in a mesh zippered pocket and put your laptop in the special padded slip compartment that holds devices of up to 15 inches.
- Lockable sliders on the main compartment – on short distances you may not lock your main compartment, yet when the travel could take a little longer, it helps not having to watch your back all the time. For me, it’s crucial that I know my stuff safe, especially since I carry ALL my stuff in the Osprey Farpoint 40 travel backpack!
- Internal compression straps – the pair of internal straps makes sure that whatever you place inside of it will stay right where you put it. Since the backpack has only one mesh, zippered inner pocket, it helps to know that stuff stashed in the large main compartment is secured.
- Front compression straps – while the Osprey Farpoint 40 can handle up to 40 pounds, most likely, you won’t always use it at maximum capacity. So, these adjustable straps will compress your gear, prevent things from moving around, and make the entire bag more stable.
- Hip belt and harness system – with its help, the weight is evenly distributed between your shoulders and hips. The effect is enhanced through the LightWire frame suspension that comes with the Farpoint 40. You’ll have to carry 40 pounds in this backpack to see what I mean.
- Back panel flap – you can tuck in the big straps and get that sleek and slim profile I was telling you about earlier. When you’re on the go, it’s important to know that your straps won’t accidentally get caught on anything!
- Padded handles – the Osprey 40 model has not one, but two padded handles located at the top of the bag and on one side. The top handle is probably going to be the most used, though, when you’re on a plane, on those tight aisles, the side handle will be a great helper.
- Padded shoulder strap – the shoulder straps are thicker, again, to ease some of the load, and are also doubled by a mesh, just like the back panel, to improve ventilation. Passionate travelers know how important ventilation can be when all your belongings are hanging on your back.
- Additional attachment points – if you’re a friend of all the carabiners out there, latching extra stuff on your Farpoint 40 will be extremely easy. Think of dirty shoes, camera tripods, a small camping mattress or pad, and so on.
What Other Travelers Say About The Farpoint 40 Pack
As you can imagine, I started to research and study what other buyers have to say about the Osprey Farpoint 40 dimensions and features long before I took the decision of purchasing it. I always felt that there’s no better quality and performance indicator other than what actual buyers and experienced users have to share. So, to these days, whenever I’m questioned about my backpack, I don’t just share my personal experience with it. I also encourage people to do their own research and collect as much information as they can.
The Farpoint 40 Review in a Nutshell: Pros & Cons
By now, you’ve seen the main design features and the way that people usually feel about using this travel backpack. If we are to sum up all of our findings from this Osprey Farpoint 40 review, the pros and cons would be, as stated below.
What I love about the Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack:
What could be improved on this Farpoint 40 version:
Now, some would even go ahead and argue that this isn’t quite a good choice for hiking and trekking. And that’s true, there are obviously much better choices in terms of wilderness backpacking bags. Still, the Osprey Farpoint 40 travel pack does not aim to serve such purposes.
While it makes a great option as a light travel backpack and even as a duffel bag or carry-on bag for the overhead bin of a plane, it’s not the top choice for professional hikers.
Talking strictly about what it was designed for… Sure, I could argue that the outer mesh pockets don’t excel at serving as water bottle pockets - not when you stash things in, up to the maximum 40 pounds capacity. But why wouldn’t you use it for smaller things like a travel map, a lantern, a compact umbrella, and so on?
As for the laptop compartment, location is not a matter of security – as we’ve seen, the Osprey Farpoint 40 does a great job at locking its valuables – but rather of weight distribution. And thanks to the super-ergonomic harness system, there’s no point in discussing this aspect too much. It’s just a matter of preference, if you want, or of how most people are used to store their electronics while on the go. If you’re not too picky, this shouldn’t bother you that much.
To make the Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack experience even better, you can pair it with…Before You Hit the Buy Now Button on the Osprey 40…
Remember that this is one of the best travel backpacks out there IF you are a well-organized traveler with different travel needs from one trip to another. To explore the Berlin or any other European capital this week and head to some famous outdoor trails in the countryside or even in the mountains next week… it’s perfectly doable with the Osprey Farpoint 40. Not that perfect if you can only picture yourself on top of the mountains, but if you’ve made it this far with reading our Farpoint 40 review, you’re probably not that type anyway.
To keep it short, this is great value for your money and it comes with lifetime warranty. If you really like what you’ve read above, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t give the Farpoint 40 backpack a chance!
